On October 1st, 2025, the United States government shut down with no clear sign of revival due to Republican and Democratic lawmakers’ failure to compromise on a budget.
The effects of funding, which goes to the government operations throughout October and beyond, are poised to cause widespread disruption for Americans in events”, ranging from travel to simple zoo visits.
This political stop influences 40% of the federal workforce, leaving over 750 thousand people on unpaid leave. The severe impact of this temporary suspension could be felt throughout the United States.
Additionally, this federal shutdown can cause major problems for travelers who cross in various ways across the world, such as long security queues and delays.
Unpaid air traffic controllers are choosing to stay home rather than go to work as a result. According to BBC author Max Matza, “Air traffic controllers and TSA workers are essential, so they will continue to work despite their efforts to avoid work-related activity.”
Unfortunately, they will not be paid until the shutdown ends. During the last shutdown on December 22, 2018, until January 25, 2019, under President Trump, workers called in sick, leading to delays in air travel in their country.
Americans who decide to travel outside the US. Will have passport agencies warn them and may have a longer process of their travel documents.
Federal employees are expected to be affected the hardest since they will not receive any paychecks. Law enforcement officers will continue to work despite the shutdown, though around 200,000 of them will go unpaid.
Those who will continue their work include border protection staff, such as ICE agents, hospital medical staff, and air traffic controllers.
Some of these workers choose to take second jobs, as they have during previous shutdowns. However, federal employees who are not deemed to be essential will be forced to stay home. Some ways these people are taking extra work is by having a small business, such as a marketing agency or writing.
“Several agencies, such as the CDC and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are likely to have many workers on layoff who are currently working on ongoing research and experiments.” According to the Washington Post writer Abjha Bhattarai
Current U.S. President Donald Trump has cut government spending and federal jobs since taking office. He has warned that a shutdown can accelerate further layoffs and allow him to cut more services and programs.
Members of Congress, in previous shutdowns, have been paid, but Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana proposed a piece of legislation called “The No Shutdown Paychecks Act” that causes members of Congress to not be paid during a shutdown.
Federal lands, national parks, and national forests have been closed to the public since the shutdown. Some parks include Carlsbad, Gulf Islands, Joshua Tree,Mammoth, The Cave, and Mesa Verde.Since then, park rangers and employees were told to stay home. This decision has led to vandalism and littering in parks and historical sites.
Animals at the National Zoo “will continue to be fed and cared for,” according to the Smithsonian.Yet the webcams will be shut off due to the zoo staff not being present for surveillance.
Visitors who want to see animals like the pandas, lions, elephants, or even naked mole rats will unfortunately not be able to.
Other healthcare, like Medicare & Medicaid, social health programs for the elderly and poor will continue, but of course, staffing shortages will occur.
Food assistance programs will be hit such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and the funds have already run out.
In addition, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is already out of food. If this shutdown drags on even longer, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could run out of money for the Disaster Relief Fund.
The United States Postal Service has not been hit as the postal service does not depend on Congress funding; it will depend on the sale of its products and services, not on US tax dollars.
Across the country, madness and hardship drag on as this shutdown continues. The longer the shutdown, the more it reminds us Americans how a shutdown like this can affect us in the long run.
