How do you like to celebrate your heritage?
While celebrating heritage can mean a variety of things to many different people, students at Castaic High School have found a way to express their own unique celebrations through Spanish Honor Society.
The Spanish Honor Society Club is located in room 607 and offers a place where students from different backgrounds have a chance to learn about Hispanic and Latino history.
While the meetings are informational, members do a lot more than just listen to the club’s officers lecture.
“Usually our main [activity] is potlucks,” says senior Co-President David Delgado, “But we also talk about other countries. In one of our meetings we talked about Panama and traditional music and dances.”
However, the Spanish Honor Society is much more than just its activities and potlucks, it’s also the amazing student body that makes up the club. Co-President Delgado explains that when he first came to Castaic High School, he wanted a place to share his own unique culture with other students.
“When the position of president opened I was close friends with [Co-President] Jocelyn Rodriguez, so we decided to join the club together and run for president.”
Delgado says that he aims to expand the club to collaborate with other Spanish Honor Society clubs from different schools such as Valencia or West Ranch High Schools before he graduates.
The club is made up from a variety of different students, some with deeply Latino backgrounds while others just join for the fun of it.
“I joined the club because I thought it was interesting and like, why not?” says sophomore Shia Chavez.
“It does a decent job of representing the Hispanic culture during meetings… [and] they [showcase] different [topics] during presentations, [such as] traditional dances like Bachata,” continues Chavez.
During meetings, club members also discuss traditional meals, such as Mexican snacks, candy, or Arroz Con Frijoles (rice with beans), ensuring the club offers a variety of different food from many different cultures.
The Spanish Honor Society is a place where anyone can get to learn or get more in touch with Hispanic and Latino culture.
