Ava Paulsen, Editor in Chief

Ava Paulsen is editor in chief of The Daily Howl at Castaic High School. She is passionate about exploring hidden perspectives, publishing unspoken stories, and adding more depth to the traditional high school newspaper. Ava won the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Silver Key in 2020 and Gold Key in 2019 for her writing. She received a National Youth Activist Award in 2017 for creating the task force that worked to change the dress code at her junior high school. Ava currently serves on Castaic High School’s School Site Council, where she continues to implement change. She is a member of the non-profit organization WriteGirl, where she participates in monthly writing workshops. She has self-published two books and is currently working on a science-fiction novel, and is a new member of the LA Times High School Insider. Ava derives much of her inspiration from the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Ronan Farrow. Along with his captivating talent for storytelling, his persistence in breaking stories to give a voice to those who have been silenced is exceptional. Ava’s favorite place to write is in nature where she can derive inspiration, but often her most fervent pieces come in the heat of the moment. Due to her love for social activism and writing, she hopes to pursue a career in investigative reporting.
