Fernanda Matias, Editor of Passion

Fernanda Matias is Editor of Passion of The Daily Howl at Castaic High School. She loves to write opinion pieces that voice her perspectives, especially on topics regarding racial injustice. Fernanda’s goal is to raise awareness for certain issues in the high school newspaper and encourage students to become more in tune with their perspectives. With a passion for advocating for her own community, she focuses on publishing pieces about adversity confronting the Latinx community. Fernanda won an award in 2018 for her writing out of her graduating class. She co-founded the debate club at Castaic High School, and founded the Latinx Culture Appreciation Club, where she helps others gain more knowledge and perspective on culture and diversity. She is also a member of the LA Times High School Insider. Fernanda loves to read in her free time, especially historical-fiction novels, because it gives her the chance to explore others’ writing tactics and ways she can implement them into her own pieces. Along with reading, she also loves to play the piano, as it is another one of her creative outlets. Ultimately, Fernanda wishes to give silent voices a stage and raise awareness for arising issues.
