As the Castaic Coyote soccer season begins this week, high expectations have been placed not only on the players, but the team altogether.
This team is also being trained by a brand new Coach Taamer, so players can expect a new type of playstyle and team coordination from their new high school junior varsity coach.
Without a frosh team, picks for junior varsity and varsity are especially selective, allowing coaches to pick only the players they deem to be worthy of being on the team.
Expectations are high this year, as the junior varsity team was able to win a pre-season game against Trinity high school with an ending score of 2-1.
Boy’s varsity soccer player Diego Nerida, who has devoted his high school life to playing soccer also voiced his opinions to the upcoming season.
“Based on our performance last game, I think our season will be half and half,” he says. “WInning half of our games and losing the others.”
He also said that the toughest competition he believes the Castaic team will have this season is against West Ranch as, “they only won last year due to a last minute goal. I believe we can go head to head with them this season.”
Varsity and junior varsity also went head to head with Crespi Carmelite High School this week as well, which unfortunately ended in a loss for both varsity and junior varsity.
This is still only the first official game of the boys soccer season, so luckily it’s just a minor setback for the team’s season.
In total, the boys soccer season will have around 14 competitive games played against different teams from neighboring schools for both varsity and junior varsity.
Some of the most prominent match ups for this season include Saugus HS, West Ranch HS, Valencia HS, and Canyon HS.
This does not include games such as scrimmages, team tournaments, or friendly matches, which are often held to hone the skills of both of the teams, not just a purely competitive environment.
Incidentally, junior varsity soccer player David Egoian has his own concerns and hopes for this season. “I think the environment isn’t lacking as a team. Some players just have to warm up to the others, but overall I think we are progressing quickly” said Egoian
However, Egoian also says not to “expect us to win every game, but everyone should expect that we try.”
He also believes that the team holds its place in the school ranks, however he thinks that sometimes the team might need a reminder of where they stand.
With the new season just kicking off and interviews from players on both Varsity and Junior Varsity, we can definitely expect an interesting new season.
But no matter what happens on the field, we will continue to support our 2025 Castaic Coyote soccer team through thick and thin!
