This year’s homecoming lūʻau theme had everyone adorned in Hawaiian tops and floral dresses, looking fit to work at our local Trader Joe’s. The dance took place on September 7th, and was truly a night to remember with dancing, food, games, and a fantastic homecoming court.
The days leading up to the dance were festivity- filled. First was the rally at the beginning of the week, where ASB planned a few fun games while dance and cheer performed their new routines.
The week continued with a festive spirit week. Senior Stefanie-Marie Trinnanes shared her appreciation for the comfort of “airport fit” day, but she was fairly hesitant about “dawgs out” day.
“It was just a bit weird, I didn’t know many people who participated.”
Then, the night before the dance, the week came to an end with the Homecoming game.
Junior homecoming court member, Ian Nguyen, said that game was his favorite part.
“The build-up to the dance was really great and it was nice seeing everyone at the game.”
Then, underneath a giant coyote inflatable, Damian Silvera was crowned senior homecoming king during half-time.
“I was really surprised at first,” Silvera said, “There were some really great candidates but its an honor and I appreciated the support.”
The dance truly lived up to all the excitement. It was set up in the hub, with the DJ’s setup in the far back corner of the Hub’s awning and food trucks lined the 800 buildings for students to grab a quick bite between dancing. The lighting made the music even more energetic, with little dance platforms scattered around the dance floor.
As the night began, many ran to the food trucks, which included Kona Ice, LA donuts, and Baby’s Badass Burgers. Kona ice was the most popular, collecting a line throughout the whole night.
Along with the food there was other entertainment, like many arcade and tabletop games.
“My favorite part was probably playing airhockey, I’m a big airhockey fan,” said junior court member Claire Angles who was especially excited for the games, “I was able to dominate.”
Junior Scarlett O’Steen played the arcade games, “Some were a bit glitchy but otherwise it was fun.”
Angles commented that she had a great time dancing and singing along to the songs with her friends. She added that she liked the DJ and appreciated his transitions.
However, Annie Lopez, senior, didn’t share the same experience. Lopez shared her disappointment in the dance,
“I didn’t really like the DJ and was just a bit bored.”
As the night progressed, it was finally time to announce the homecoming queen. After much anticipation, Valerie Cheer was announced as this year’s homecoming queen.
“It was so exciting,” Cheer said, recalling her experience of the dance, “I loved dancing with my friends and hanging out with all the other girls on the court.”
With colorful lights and a dance floor full of students, the night was one to remember. Overall, many enjoyed their time and even those who didn’t still enjoyed the time with their friends.
