Do you know what the CARE Text number here at Castaic High School is used for? At some point, you’ve probably glimpsed over at the posters in their classrooms.
In the Hart School District, every junior high and high school has their own hotline for students to notify administration about any possible or physical threat to the school. Here at Castaic High School, CARE Text has become a layer of protection for both students and staff.
“It’s used for a variety of reasons actually,” said Principal Ferry. “Whether you’re having trouble with another student or if you hear about a fight happening after school, it’s a great and safe way to let us know so we can start talking to the people ahead of time and squash the conflict. We’re pretty good at solving the problems when we know about them ahead of time.”
Although students at Castaic High School like the idea of having a hotline where they can report a serious issue, some have spoken out and said they don’t like the fact that CARE Text is only confidential and not anonymous.
“I don’t think many people find it safe,” mentioned an anonymous student. “I think a lot of students don’t like the idea of sharing personal information with someone and not being anonymous. I can see where it would feel like an invasion of privacy.”
Even though CARE Text is not anonymous, Principal Ferry wants to assure everyone at Catstaic High School that most reporters are never contacted about the text.
“The only time I wouldn’t keep it anonymous is if it’s a 911 emergency when someone’s life is in danger immediately. That’s when I don’t have time to keep it anonymous. I would have to get information right away,” Principal Ferry added. “We’ve had hundreds of reports from students through CARE Text and we’ve been able to keep them confidential and anonymous. Our goal is to just solve the problem and keep each other safe. Trust me, we don’t get a rush from getting kids in trouble.”
If you should feel that there’s any type of threat to Castaic High School or any individual attending or working here, report to the CARE Text number, (661)213-9399.
